Perception Regarding Students¡¯ Suicidal Behavior and Attitudes Towards Suicide among School Counselors

Abstract
Objectives£ºThis study aimed to investigate the current states of awareness of students¡¯ suicidal behavior and attitudes towards suicide among school counselors and to identify factors contributing to their attitudes towards suicide.

Methods£º A total of 316 school counselors were recruited in 2012. We investigated school counselors¡¯ perception regarding students¡¯ suicidal behaviors such as suicide ideation, plan, and attempt. 17 items of questionnaire about attitudes toward suicide were used for their attitudes towards suicide.

Results£º Awareness of Middle school counselors were more likely to perception of students¡¯ suicidal behavior. Attitudes towards the mental illness aspects of suicide was correlated with recent employed school carrier group. Attitudes toward the moral aspects and media roles of suicide were different according to the degree of school counselors¡¯ perception of students¡¯ suicidal behaviors.

Conclusion£º Considering the impact of attitudes towards suicide on the school counseling support of students at suicide risk, school-based suicide prevention strategies need to address the comprehensive approach with training of school counselors¡¯ knowledge of about students¡¯ suicidal behaviors and the effect of own attitudes towards suicide.
